Golden glory for Filey in Bloom at awards
Filey secures a gold award at the 2016 RHS Britain in Bloom competition
Filey in Bloom members have turned their green fingers to gold after winning a top award at the 2016 RHS Britain in Bloom contest. Representatives from the group travelled to Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham last week for the glitzy national final.
Having previously won Silver Gilt at the competition, the team were overwhelmed to find out they had secured a gold award.
Marion Wright, chairman of Filey in Bloom, said: “It was our fourth time at Britain in Bloom and this year we were really aiming to get gold.
“We only found out when we got up on the stage and we were absolutely ecstatic.
“It’s due really to the hard work of the committee pulling out all the stops to work with the borough council on getting the gardens looking supreme.”
Marion added that on judging day, the Britain in Bloom representatives were taken around the town by Filey in Bloom members, who were dressed in different costumes at different stops to represent the heritage of Filey.
Outfits included a railway worker, Edwardian resident, a pirate and someone in a sea bathing costume.
Marion said: “There were different themes throughout the day and we got some very good comments on how we engage with the community.”
The judges also took on board the efforts of the local litter picking group and the Brownies who dressed up as butterflies in Crescent Gardens. Chairman, Filey in Bloom
Marion continued: “Five of us went to the awards and it was a really good night.
“We will continue to work hard fundraising and keeping everything tidy. We’ll soon be planting spring bulbs.
“The gardens are one of the best things about Filey - they are a highlight of the town.
“Some of the committee have been members for many years and they are very committed, so this award is very deserved.
“We also welcome new members too if anyone would like to find out more and join us.” A Filey firm is proud to be in amongst the big boys after earning its first national award.
Online insurance brokerage Cura Financial Services, provides protection to those who have been deemed ‘uninsurable’ which could be due to adverse health, hazardous occupations/hobbies and foreign travel. The firm won its first award when they were named the Best Small Intermediary of the Year award at the Cover Excellence Awards.
Kathryn Knowles, who runs the Station Approach business with husband Alan, said: “It is amazing to be battling against some large competitors in our industry.”
The firm was highly commended at the Cover Awards for its marketing campaign while also being shortlisted for two further national awards in recent weeks.
“I’d like to thank all our staff who work tirelessly to provide the best service possible,” said Kathryn.
“People need to know that there are options if they are initially turned away for insurance.”
