Cadets win medals for Somme project work
Four Army Cadets from Scarborough are celebrating after being awarded silver medals at the recent Operation Reflect competition in Durham. Corporal Jessica TappendenRowell, Lance Corporals Tori Pollard and Katie Mills, and Cadet Jasmine Roper, were tasked with the projects as part of the World War One Centenary events.
Having spent several weeks researching the Battle of the Somme, the team presented their findings to senior officers from the local area. They delivered it as a set of “orders”, describing the ground and what happened in detail.
Impressed by their knowledge and confidence, the judges awarded the team from Scarborough a well-deserved second place in the region, setting the record for the highest placing that a team from Yorkshire has ever achieved in the competition.
Detachment commander, Second Lieutenant Billie Grisdale, said: “It was humbling for the girls to play a part in the First World War Centenary events, and their fantastic result at the brigade level compe- tition was a real testament to their hard work and dedication over the past few weeks, and of course on the day itself.”
The girls will soon be attending several Remembrance events along with around 40 other Army Cadets from Scarborough. These events help to ensure that young people from the local area understand the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces.
