3D Minecraft model created at Coastival
Four new attractions will provide the centrepiece to the next Coastival festival in Scarborough.
The attractions, which include a bid to recreate Scarborough in 3D in the Minecraft computer game, were chosen out of bids from local, regional and national artists.
This is a community effort including schools, colleges, community groups and individuals, painstakingly creating Scarborough in Minecraft and culminating in a huge Minecraft event over the Coastival weekend at the Spa.
The other events are the “Market Hall Myriad of Music and Madness, a “living light sculpture” with sea glass, and “Sunny spells with a chance of snow” – an immersive, condensed summertime experience.
The four events will play a major part in Coastival when it is held on Saturday 18 February and Sunday 19 February with the theme: Coastival: the Unexpected.
Coastival director Wendy Holroyd said: “The four new commissions represent something new and unique and fit the brief of providing something completely unexpected.
“We’ll be creating Scarborough in Minecraft, cramming a seaside experience into a tiny caravan, hosting entertainment amongst the market stalls and lighting up the seafront in glass.
“With these four new aspects of Coastival, and other new and established events to be added, it looks set to be a fantastic weekend.”
Under the “unexpected” theme, visitors can expect to see artwork, music and performances in unusual locations as the event looks to break with people’s expectations of a traditional arts festival.
