Newcastle were wrecked in Bridlingto­n Bay as a consequenc­e of being badly overloaded. After this, ships could not be overloaded by law.

Finally, mention was made of the local shipwreck of the freighter ‘Fred Everard’ which ran ashore at Ravenscar on November 27, 1965. The crew of 14 were all saved by Whitby lifeboat, and local coastguard­s from Ravenscar and Robin Hood’s Bay.

The next meeting of the group will be on Tuesday November 15 at 7.30pm in Staintonda­le Village Hall, when chairman Mike Lester will be talking about the history and origins of English carols.

Will members please note that in January, February and March the history group meetings will be held at 2.30pm. From April we will revert to evenings.

Eileen Beaumont’s new book, ‘The History of Ravenscar after the Town That Never Was’, is now available. She can be contacted on 01723 371007. Goode. The sermon was based on the Gospel reading. Music was provided by Mike Lester. Coffee was served after the service in the community church hall.

Next week there will be a service of Holy Communion at St Mark’s, Newby, with the Very Rev Vivienne Faull, Dean of York. The collection will go to Tearfund for the relief fund for Haiti. There will be no other morning service in the group.

The coffee shop will be open from 10am–11.30am in Cloughton Community Church Hall on Friday, October 28 for coffee and cake, and various stalls. will be invited to light a candle to remember someone dear to them. Monday November 7 at Newby and Scalby Community Hall at 8pm. All welcome.
