WI meeting

President Edna Burton welcomed members and three guests to the October meeting of Seamer and Irton WI. The history weekend, held in the memorial hall, had been very interestin­g and Edna thanked all those who helped set up and manned the WI stall.

News was given of the recently formed WI in Scarboroug­h who will be meeting at the Stephen Joseph Theatre with a membership of 67, calling themselves the Scarboroug­h Seagals.

A report on the future of the Scarboroug­h Produce and Handicraft Show was read by Jan Braidley, who said that the show committee had decided that a show would not be held in 2017. The next show will be in spring 2018 which gives plenty of time for members to be thinking of new ideas.

The group carol service will be held at St Stephen’s Church Snainton at 7pm on December 8, everyone is welcome.

Pam Cooper gave a report from the autumn council meeting held in Easingwold last week. It had been a very good meeting, chaired by Janice Whiteford, who said that this year we have 200 new members in this area and 8,500 nationally. The guest speaker was Judith Hibbert, actress and singer, who entertaine­d with a musical tribute to Julie Andrews, Joyce Grenfell, Gracie Fields and others.

The spring council meeting will be on April 29 and will be take place at the Spa complex.

The next craft afternoon will be on November 9 in the memorial hall from 2pm-4pm.

Our guest speaker, Kieran Middleton, was welcomed by Edna, and he gave a fascinatin­g talk and slide show about the trip he had made along with students from Scarboroug­h College, in 2014, to Malawi in Africa. It was obvious from the talk that this had had a profound effect on him, and his outlook on life. He was thanked by Enid Plevey and was asked lots of questions by members.

The competitio­n for an animal photograph was won by Jo Thompson, and the raffle winners were Celia Ainge, Jo Thompson, Doreen Livesey ad Hazel Hall.

The next meeting will be held at 7.30pm in the memorial hall on November 16 when Sue Monkman will present a hands on ‘Crafty Christmas’. The competitio­n will be for a design on a postcard made with buttons. Margaret Neave who also took the collection. Bible readings were given by Jan Blower who read from Isaiah and Luke’s gospel and Tina Greenley who also read from Luke’s gospel The Prodigal Son.

The theme of Malcolm’s sermon was the gentleness of Jesus and he started the sermon with Mandy Clayton singing the children’s hymn Gentle Jesus Meek and Mild. He spoke of Jesus quite often these days being portrayed as being forceful and mighty and not the gentle Jesus we were taught as children but when we read bible passages it is often the way we read them and not the way they are written.

The preacher on Sunday at 10.30am is the Rev Denise Free and Holy Communion will be observed.

The Knit and Natter group is on Thursday at 2pm and the Singing for Fun Group is on Friday at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to these groups just come along. Haycock served refreshmen­ts.

Rev Moreland also led the 11am modern service of Holy Communion and baptised Rose Ellen Luke, baby daughter of Iain and Emma Luke and sister of Elsie and Eleanor. The godparents were Becky and Josh Cremer, Jo Taylor and Steve Raettig.

Iain Luke gave the Bible reading and the Rev Moreland spoke about the significan­ce of the Bible, using the idea of a satellite navigation system: God’s book to direct our path in life, recalculat­ing when we go wrong and putting us back on the right path and leading us safely to our destinatio­n. Liz Cremer led the prayers and Becky Cremer sang a special song for the occasion while people received communion. The sung worship was led by Richard Fuller with John and Sue Grice and John Taylor. Jean Donovan and Jenny Bland looked after the Sunday Club and Wendy Haslam and Elizabeth Bradley served coffee after the service. the previous ministers of the church. The welcomer was Julie Barber, the hymns were chosen by the congregati­on and the organist was Jane Allen. The steward was Margaret Welsh who also gave one of the readings and the other reader was the Rev Bruce Russell. Refreshmen­ts were served after the service by Ann Green.

This Sunday the service will be led by J Biltcliff and all are welcome. The raffle tickets were sold by Anne Bogg

Tea and coffee was served by Mrs A Dowson assisted by Mrs M Bogg.

Thursday November 10 is the annual general meeting, will all please attend at 1.30pm prompt.
