Town’s panorama will host big event again
Scarborough Has Been Unveiled To Be Hostirg A Start or finish for next year's Tour de Yorkshire.
After staging a finish for the two previous editions of the inaugural race, the town has bagged the hat-trick after being chosen to host some of the world’s best cyclists.
The three-day men’s race will take place from Friday April 28 to Sunday April 30 with racing to begin or end in Bridlington, Harrogate, Bradford, Fox Valley (Sheffield) and Tadcaster as well as Scarborough. The women’s race will be held on Saturday 29 April.
The second edition took place earlier this year with two million roadside spectators and 11.4 million global TV viewers, figures race organisers hope to improve for next year’s event.
Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “In just two years the Tour de Yorkshire has become one of the biggest and best races on the professional cycling calendar. Riders are overwhelmed by the support they receive on the roadside and the racing is among the most exciting you will see all season.
“The third edition will continue that progression and the attention it receives will be greater than ever given that we have just succeeded in bringing the UCI Road World Championships to the county in 2019.”
Figures from Scarborough Council and Welcome to Yorkshire revealed that this year’s Tour de Yorkshire race injected £1 million into Scarborough’s economy.
Cllr Derek Bastiman, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council said: “The race organisers obviously can’t get enough of the Yorkshire coast with both Scarborough and our neighbours Bridlington featuring in the start-finish line up. This level of recognition is brilliant for our part of the county and I hope it also puts us in prime position for consideration by the organisers of the UCI Road World Championships in 2019.”
More than 30,000 people lined North Bay on May 1 to see veteran Frenchman Thomas Voeckler win the Tour de Yorkshire 2016 after claiming victory in the final stage.
The full 2017 race route will be unveiled in December 2016 – this announcement will include exact start and finish locations and the distance and profile of the race.
