A 300-year-old witch and her one-eared cat are the stars of a series of books by writer, artist and poet Graham Rhodes.

Agnes and Marmaduke meet spies, highwaymen, vikings and smugglers in their adventures – captured in five books with a sixth – featuring veggie vampires – on its way.

The character of Agnes – scornful of modern times – was inspired by Graham’s house in the

Old Town and Marmaduke is based on his cat.

“There is a medieval wall in the cellar of my house and I had this idea of Agnes living in the house and being able to pass through the wall and end up in the 1700s,” said Graham.

Once in the 1700s the cat transforms into a six foot tall, one-eyed highwayman.

The books are based in Scarborough and the surrounding area in both the present day and in the 1700s.

They are also meticulously researched.

The first adventure A Witch Her Cat and A Pirate, set in the period of the American War of Independence, sees them foiling an attempt by John Paul Jones to stage an American invasion during the Battle of Flamborough.

The second, A Witch her Cat and The Ship Wreckers, is based prior to the fourth Anglo-Dutch war of 1780, sees them pitted against foreign agents and local militias.

The third adventure A Witch her Cat and The Devil Dogs, sees them attempt to disrupt an evil force and their devil dogs from prowling the North Yorkshire moors.

The fourth, A Witch her Cat and A Viking Hoard, sees them transported back to Viking Scarborough in an at- tempt to save the settlement from Viking invaders.

In the fifth book, A Witch Her Cat and the Whistler, they foil smugglers and spies in Robin Hoods Bay.
