Scarborough’s newest supermarket is set to open next week. Lidl is putting the finishing touches to its Seamer Road store on the site of the former McCain Stadium.

The German giant has been reluctant to reveal the opening date so far but Scarborough Mayor, Cllr Simon Green, is scheduled to do the honours on Thursday February 16.

In order to complete the store contractors will close Seamer Road from 7pm tonight until 5am tomorrow to allow for more works to the entrance of the store.

Diversions will take place along Queen Margaret’s Road, Filey Road, Westbourne Grove and Valley Road.

This week, Lidl put in place the borough’s first charging station for electric cars in its car park.

The supermarket chain, which has stores in Whitby, Pickering and Norton, says its Scarborough premises will be open between 7am and 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am and 4pm on Sundays.

There are more than 100 car parking spaces for shoppers to use.

Lidl has also given £20,000 to improve the traffic light system at the junction of Seamer Road and Queen Margaret’s Road.

A spokesman for Lidl said: “We look forward to serving local residents with our fresh, quality produce in the near future.”

North Yorkshire County Council has also confirmed it will finally remove the cones outside B&M, which have blighted Seamer Road for two years.

The highways authority indicated that it is returning to the original plan from 2014 to put a traffic island in the road.

The auhtority refused to put a time frame on the work but said it is “progressing”.
