Thief pushed TV from shop

A mother has received a suspended sentence after walking a TV out a Scarborough supermarket without paying.

Scarborough Magistrates’ Court heard how Claire Ross, 31, walked into Sainsbury’s in Falsgrave Road on November 2 with her mother and daughter, put a Celcus TV in her trolley and then left with no means of payment. Ross was seen on CCTV and was arrested at her home address, on Mount View Close, where the TV box was found in her recycling bin.

Katy Varlow, prosecuting, told the hearing that the TV’s spider security device had been broken. In police interview Ross accepted she didn’t have a TV but wanted one and had no money to buy it. She pleaded guilty to one count of theft and one count of criminal damage at the hearing, on February 9.

Mr Brickman, defending, said: “The TV was recovered. She did not want to get into trouble. She has managed to get employment at a takeaway and has not started yet.”

During the hearing Ross also pleaded guilty to being in possession of a class C drug and four earlier thefts.

Ross was sentenced to a total of 16 weeks in jail, suspended for 12 months, ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work and pay £107 compensation.

She is also excluded from the Brunswick Shopping CentreandMarksandSpencerfor the next 12 months.
