The annual quiz held in Snainton Village Hall last Friday was a successful evening with 75 participants who took part with great enthusiasm. Everyone enjoyed a delicious cooked supper prepared by library volunteers. A big thank you to Alan who set the questions and Rob who provided the music and kept the score, to all the helpers and to everyone who braved the appalling weather to take part. All the teams were named after birds. The winning team was the Kite team (Judy and Phil Trafford; Janet and John Ward) with Hawk and Harrier teams coming in second and third places. The Kestrel team won the coveted wooden spoon award. The sum of £563 was raised in support of the community library.

The talk by Geoff Derrington ‘Pictures of Old Ayton’ last Thursday was a complete sell out. Geoff provided lots of fascinating information about the two villages, all illustrated by local postcards, pictures and photographs from the collection of the late Philip Drury.

The next talk in our winter programme takes place on Thursday March 9 at 7pm in the library.

Entitled ‘Poisoned Pen’ local crime writer Kate Evans will talk about the key elements which make up a crime novel. She will trace the growth of this genre from the earliest crime novels, through its ‘Golden Age’ to modern times. Her talk is interactive and is illustrated with recorded extracts from various novels.

Tickets £3, including refreshments and are available from Derwent Valley BRIDGE Community Library, West Ayton. Telephone 01723 863052. Advance booking is advisable, limited space available. ion at 10am. This will be followed at 11am by the Midweek Discussion group in the community hall, which will be repeated on Thursday evening at Cloughton Vicarage at 7pm.
