Interesting speakers

-

So far this year, all of the Filey Ladies Monday Club meetings have been very well-attended with no cancellations. Members are always happy to chat and listen to an interesting speaker.

Following the talk about ‘Hearing Dogs for the Deaf ’ members were so affected that they collected £54 for the charity, which was gratefully acknowledged by letter.

At the next meeting the annual outing in June was discussed. Then Betty Burr took to the floor to give an interesting and humorous account of her experiences in amateur theatricals which started when she was very young producing concerts, and later she joined an amateur company and soon moved from the chorus to take on lead roles.

Betty described her many years in show business as great fun - the frantic costume changes, the famous writers and composers she met and the on-stage troupes during her many summers in the old time musical shows at the holiday camp in Cayton Bay.

On Monday March 6 there was a programme change when speakers from the Samaritans came at short notice to speak about their long association with the charity which started in 1953 and today 20,000 volunteers answer calls for help every six seconds through 201 separate branches. They are open round the clock, every day of the year.

John spoke of the opening of the Scarborough branch in 2008 and Frances revealed the many reasons why she is proud to be a long-serving volunteer. They both answered many questions and distributed information cards with details about the work of the charity.

The next meeting will be on Monday March 20 when members will meet at Filey Golf Club, 7pm for 7.30pm, for the annual dining out.
