Science and stars set to collide at book festival
BOOKS BY THE BEACH, VARIOUS VENUES, SCARBOROUGH April 26 to May 1
Calling all budding Einsteins! TV scientist Helen Czerski is visiting Scarborough Library on Saturday April 29 at 5pm and making physics fun.
By linking what makes popcorn pop to Antarctic winds, coffee stains to blood tests, and ketchup bottles to aliens in space, Helen demonstrates what patterns in our day-to-day lives can reveal.
By using examples from her new book Storm in a Teacup she’ll show how the human body, our planet and our civilisation interlock - demonstrating new ways of looking at the world that surrounds us.
Helen Czerski is a lecturer in the mechanical engineering department at University College London. As a physicist she studies bubbles underneath ocean waves to understand their effects on weather and climate.
Helen regularly presents BBC programmes on physics, the ocean and the atmosphere – recent series include Colour: The Spectrum of Science, Orbit, Operation Iceberg, Super Senses and Dara O’Briain’s Science Club.
And sometimes science and the stars collide...
At this year’s festival Helen won’t be the only visiting scientist as Monday May 1features Gary Fildes - Sunderland bricklayer turned astronomer.
Gary is the founder and lead astronomer of Kielder Observatory. It receives over 20,000 visitors a year, and its mission is to educate and enthuse the public. In 2012 Gary was given an honorary master’s degree from Durham University in recognition for his services to astronomy. He is currently leading a multi-million pound fundraising drive to make Kielder the world’s biggest public observatory.
This event is sponsored by Scarborough and Ryedale Astronomical Society.
Books by the Beach runs from Wednesday April 26 to Monday May 1.
Actresses Harriet Walter and Denise Welch will be appearing.
