More than 600 cars descended on Scarborough Seafront at the weekend to mark the first meet of the season. The Static Royals, a Yorkshire coast-based car club for lowered cars enthusiasts, has hosted a number of meets at the Oasis Cafe, in North Bay, and kicked started the season last Sunday. Between 1,500 and 2,000 people were at the event.

One of the organisers Ryan Linley said: “It’s just a brilliant, friendly atmosphere – there’s no fights or trouble.

“The police contact us and ask if they can come along to the event and we welcome it.

“We want everybody to be safe and have fun. The police get involved and chat with people about their cars.”

The organisers also say they try to raise funds for charity and help benefit local business such as the Oasis Cafe and JM Vinyl.

“If business can come to the meet and benefit from it that’s good for everybody,” added Ryan. The meets have raised a lot for the Teenage Cancer Trust. One of their members Stephen Phelps, of Bridlington, died last year aged 24 and his family have continued to take his car to meets and raise funds.

His dad, Chris Phelps said: “Last year we held a memorial meet for Stephen and we raised £1,600 on the one night.” At the weekend just from bucket-shaking, they managed to raise another £100 after they asked the Static Royals if they could fundraise.

He added: “We take his car along to the meets. He has a Nissan Skyline and it’s not a car you come across often so everyone remembers it. It’s a way of keeping his memory alive.”
