It’s less than two weeks until the children of the borough will be celebrated at a new awards ceremony to recognise the achievements of youngsters in the past 12 months.

The Scarborough News, along with our sister papers the Whitby Gazette and the Filey & Hunmanby Mercury, plus Scarborough Borough Council and sponsor McCain, launched the Young Stars Awards to recognise the efforts of the area’s children.

The event is a new version ofthesuccessfulBorough’sBig Thank You Awards, with the judgingandsponsorsthisyear changing to a dedicated family and youth focus instead.

The judging panel gathered at the Town Hall on Thursday to consider the nominations for each of the seven categories. The panel also decided on who would take home the special Max Payne Memorial Award.

The competition was tough for each category with all of them filled with plenty of worthy winners.

Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough Cllr Simon Green said: “I was thrilled to be asked to take part in the judging of the Young Stars Awards.

“It was difficult because there were many young people worthy of the awards.

“I am proud to be Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough with so many wonderful inspiring young people in the borough.”

Television presenter and former Miss Scarborough Carolyn Hodgson will host the Young Stars Awards.

Scarborough Rugby Union Football Club has generously agreed to provide the venue and refreshments for the in- augural event on April 3.

Nominees and nominators have been contacted for full details of the event. People attending the night are reminded to arrive at Scarborough Rugby Club at 5.30pm for a prompt 6pm start.
