Audiences are being asked to wear warm clothing and bring a blanket to enjoy being part of Beach Hut Theatre’s next performance at the Old Parcels Office at Scarborough Railway Station.
Hot soup is also being handed ou. Beach Hut Theatre is challenging public perceptions of mental health with its reinterpretation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen.
Written by John Pattison and Alison Watt, SnOwQuEeN is an original urban fantasy musical that considers the social isolation caused by depression in young adults that can culminate in homelessness.
SnOwQuEeN is directed by Alison Watt, with musical direction by John Pattison and design by Michael Roberts.
The central character is Kaiden, a young man from Leeds on the run. Bobby Moore, who plays Kaiden, said, “The character I play is on ajourney, not just to Scarborough, but an emotional one as well. He is on the run from the past, but in the end he can’t run from himself.”
Co-writer and director Alison Watt said, ‘SnOwQuEeN seeks to break the ice and get conversations started around every day mental health conditions.
“When Kaiden finds himself literally at the end of the line, it is through the guidance of some new friends and a musical tale-telling of The Snow Queen that helps throw some light on his life.”
At runs at the Old Parcels Office from Wednesday March 29 until Saturday April 1, daily at 7pm and a 1.30pm matinee on the Saturday. Tickets from Woodend Creative Workspace in The Crescent or by ringing 01723 384500. Tickets will also available on the door at the Old Parcels Offic.
As part of the Breaking the Ice project, on Saturday April 22, SuDdEn ThAwS, six short plays by local writers, can be seen for free in Scarborough Library’s main lending area between 10am and 2pm.
