Fun in Filey

-

There is always something to see and do in Filey, including a visit to an award-winning museum, in a 17th century home.

There is always something to see and do in and around Filey. Tucked away in the heart of the old town, in Queen Street, is Filey’s award-winning museum, housed in buildings that date from the 17th century.

Owned by Michael Fearon, the museum is run entirely by volunteers. It chronicles Filey’s development from a small fishing village to a popular holiday resort, with each room focusing on a particular aspect of local life and history.

The museum is open seven days a week from 11am to 5pm (Saturdays from 2pm).

Although only a small town, Filey boasts a number of festivals during the year.

Filey Folk Festival (April 28–May 1) takes place at eight venues, all within walking distance of each other, and is fast gathering momentum on the folk festival scene. A communityled event, it has live music, arts and street performances and an impressive line-up of performers.

The Festival of Filey (July 29–30) kicks off with a dragon-themed celebration at the Country Park. The grand opening, a spectacular event, will be held in Crescent Gardens as usual and other events include a carnival and beach bonanza.

Filey’s streets are again alive with music for the Filey Music Festival (September 2–9) which has music for all ages and tastes – and all events are free.

Muston Scarecrow Festival (July 29–August 7) is a fun event when the village, a couple of miles inland from Filey, is taken over by over by more than 100 scarecrows. You’ll find them on pavements, roofs, in gardens, on the village green – in fact they are everywhere.
