Couple complete gruelling trek up Mt Kilimanjaro

-

A Scarborough couple have completed a gruelling challenge – climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

Husband and wife team Sharron and Chris Rogers, who live on North Street, had to endure altitude sickness as they made it to the summit.

At the top of the mountain they unfurled a flag which paidtributetoSharron’ssister Tracy who was killed last year. It was signed by a number of people who knew her.

Sharron said: “I suffered withaltitudesicknessat3,800 metres. I had a terrible headache and felt sick. I didn’t eat for three and a half days.

“On the night we were going to the summit, at midnight, the wind got up and ripped our tent which collapsed in on us. It was frightening.

“We were well chuffed to get to the summit though.

“People called us mad when we revealed we were taking on the challenge, but we felt a great sense of achievement when we got to the top.”

Sharron also had some words of advice for former Pindar School and Scarborough Sixth Form student Matthew Beck who tackles the mountain later this year.

She said: “All I can say to Matthew is just take it nice and easy. It also depends on the route he is taking.

“We took the ‘Whisky’ route with beautiful and varied surroundings.

“He should also take some energy gels, protein bars, and a flask. They made a big difference.”
