Students cooking up a treat for autism week
The new Filey cafe is staffed y Ebor Academy pupils with learning difficulties
Children from the Ebor Academy in Filey got a taste of serving members of the public while simultaneously raising money for a good cause.
Pupils working towards hospitality and catering qualifications served food and drinks at The Place Cafe at Filey Youth Centre in Brooklands on Monday while raising money for Autism Awareness.
Becky Harden, outreach
support worker at South Scarborough and Filey Prevention Service, said it had been a great day for the children involved.
She said: “Many of the children we work with from Ebor Academy have additional education needs and this is a great opportunity for them to get some experience in the workplace.
“The headteacher and some teachers came down from Ebor Academy and it was open to the public. There was a raffle and name the teddy and other things to raise money for the charity and the children also got some great help towards their qualifications.
“Everyone really enjoyed it.” The Place cafe is run by Rachel Brickman from Hungate Health and Hygiene.
She said: “The cafe is run every Monday by students with different learning difficulties and with it being Autism Awareness week we wanted to do something where people could come and network in a relaxed environment.
“It was the normal Monday service with a breakfast and a lunch menu and everyone really enjoyed it.
“It was an opportunity for people to come down and learn more about autism.
“We raised close to £200 for the charity and we will be holding more events in the future.”
