More planning wasneeded

Last week I had the misfortune of having to go to work. Not that I dislike my job, in fact I enjoy it, but the fact was that I had to get to work.

From Westborough to Newborough there were bollards, barricades, ramps and even mechanical diggers being led by men wearing hard hats, reminiscent of the days when cars followed a man with a red flag.

This was all happening in the main pedestrian precinct alongside families with small children, the elderly and disabled. As well as being visually unappealing the loud noise of the drilling was causing distress to many.

On my way to work I heard comments from both residents of the town and visitors alike, many who vowed not to come into the town centre again until the work had been completed.

Some of us have no choice but to go into the town centre, perhaps for a lunch break which now takes longer as we have to manoeuvre from one side of the road to another trying to avoid the many obstacles.

Some of us actually work in shops, banks etc alongside the work and the constant noise.

When the town centre is in such disarray with empty shops and homeless people sleeping in doorways, the added construction work does nothing to encourage visitors to our town.

What were the council and their contractors thinking of when they embarked on this project?

The work may have needed doing but surely it could have been arranged so only a small area was completed at one time before starting on another. Debby McDonald Wreyfield Drive Scarborough
