Forty pairs battled it out at Eastfield’s Eastway crown green in the second Sunday merit of the spring summer season.

The competition was drawn pairs and it was an even playing field with not one pair standing out as the obvious winners – as some close results were to prove.

The winners were Geoff Watson, of Whitby, and home bowler, Mick Hill, president of the Scarborough and District Bowling Association.

Hill bowled well all day, supplemented by Watson’s experience.

They beat the pairing of Dukes Park’s Gary Puleston and North Cliff ’s Dave Momnent 21-17 in the final.

In the semi-finals Hill and Watson beat Robert Child, of North Cliff, and John Holmes, of Hunmanby, 21-17.

Puleston and Moment overcame Tim Purcell, of Robin Hood’s Bay, and Penny Gosling, of Borough, 21-15.

The merit on Sunday is a mixed doubles contest at Hunmanby with a 9.30am start and this is followed by a singles competition at Dukes park on Sunday April 9.

The league contests start on Monday with the Evening League getting under way.

The Doubles League starts on Wednesday April 5 when Borough 3 will play Westgate with the rest of the fixtures being played on Thursday.

The first Saturday clashes are on Saturday April 15 and the Over-60s start on Wednesday May 3.
