Scarborough power to title after Brid victory

-

The Winter Indoor Tennis League finished last week and in the end there were no real surprises.

Scarborough A, despite a few hiccups midway through the rounds, had only to draw with their nearest rivals Bridlington 1 to take the Division

One title.

They exceeded this quite comfortably winning the match by four rubbers to zero.

Not only did Dave Thompson with partner Jake Rawlinson take their two rubbers as expected, but the new partnership of captain Bryan Edwards and James Draper took both of theirs.

Brid took their usual team of Howard Robinson and John Aston and Peter Nurse with Dave Revell, but had to return home with no victory and no championship. Rudston 2 took the Division Two title although they lost on the final evening to Scarborough D.

This was another fine close-fought encounter and a fitting end to 10 weeks of hardfought competition.

David Hudghton oncemore filled in for Rudston where he has become more or less a permanent fixture.

He played with Mike Sellers and Jane Crossley partnered Ian Reed both of whom had fine games.

However it was the excellent form of the 17-year-old Scarborough player Marcus Brown partnering Tom Hunt and Josh Robinson with his partner Steve Brindle who took the rubbers and the match and these three youngster will prove invaluable in the summer season in the Driffield League teams for Scarborough.

Hackness played Rudston 1 in another Division Two tie.

This ended in a hardfought draw with the Hackness pair of Adam Tildsley and Martin Glassett really too strong for the opposition pairs of James Doyle and Steve Wilson and Phil Edgerton partnering Will Needham.

However both these pairs took their ties against the second Hackness pair of Jon Conyers and Ekaitz Unanue giving a very fair result overall with both teams ending up in the middle of the table.

The final match in the whole of the competition had Scarborough E against Bridlington 2.

This was a one-sided affair as Scarborough had out one of their strongest teams with Mark White partnering John Reay and Steve Jones with Graeme Scott completing the team.

Both pairs were unbeaten on the night.

However Bridlington put up a good fight as ever especially from captain Jon Bell and his regular partner Keren Miller with Mike Fell and Charlie Hanley.
