Calls for action after pair die crossing the A64

-

A councillor has called for action at a “dangerous crossing” where two people were killed on the A64 at the weekend.

The couple had just got off a Coastliner doubledecker bus when they were struck by the black Renault minibus just before midnight on Saturday on the A64 at Crambeck near Malton.

The minibus was travelling west towards York when the accident happened. The two victims Dave Tinker, 50, and Julie Gough, 52, were pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement, their families said: “Dave and Julie were very loved, and will be sorely missed by Julie’s two young sons and their respective families.”

They lived in Malton. Mayor of Malton Paul Andrews, who used to live in Crambeck, said: “I think it is a very dangerous crossing. It is like many parts of the A64, they have been going to do something about it for years and years and it has never happened. We are still waiting for it to be dualled. People walk across it to get to the pub in Welburn.

“It doesn’t matter which Government is in power, they do nothing and this is a very sad and tragic accident, which perhaps could have been prevented if only something had been done about improving the A64 years ago.”

Executive member for highways and road safety champion County Councillor Don Mackenzie said it was too early to comment on the accident.
