WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR SOUTH BAY?
CThe development will create around 500sqm of new exhibition, workshop, event and studio space and would include potential for the development of unique retail space for local artists.
This offers great potential to provide new opportunities for jobs and training, generating income streams not currently possible with existing facilities for visual arts.
A feasibility study, currently in progress, will address the potential of this and focus on its sustainability and the longterm cultural and economic benefits.
The proposals should be seen in the wider context of the potential of Scarborough’s South Bay. The site is an integral part of the extensive Victorian landscaped public gardens linking the town centre across the Spa footbridge to the Esplanade along South Cliff, Spa Complex and Italian Gardens.
“Children’s Corner”, as it is known locally, is a muchloved site and an important part of Scarborough’s unique history as a seaside town.
The current empty and derelict building presents a sad and jarring feature of the landscape in what is a beautiful natural environment.
To bring the building back into use would restore pride in the area, promote wider enjoyment by local residents of this special site and bring associated economic benefits through an enhanced tourism offer.
The exhibition, Changing Rooms, can be seen at Crescent Arts until Sunday July 30 and there are two discussion sessions planned for Friday July 28 and Saturday July 29 at 12.30pm at Crescent Arts.
We invite members of the public to take part and let us know what you think about our proposals.
Crescent Arts is a registered charity supported through public funding by Arts Council England and Scarborough Borough Council. rescent Arts plans to create a landmark arts, cultural, community and visitor resource in Scarborough’s South Bay.
Working closely with Scarborough Borough Council, we propose to restore and develop the disused sunbathing pavilion and adjacent public conveniences next to the cliff lift.
The site has a fascinating history and huge potential in a beautiful location and conservation area. We aim to find innovative and practical solu- tions to the challenges of the site, and to develop an inspiring and sustainable cultural venue, for the benefit of the local community and as a great new visitor attraction.
The Project Office at Leeds Beckett University School of Art, Architecture and Design has been working with us over the past nine months to research the potential and explore design proposals to restore and develop the building and site. Taking an overview of Scarborough and the surrounding area, with its attractions for residents and visitors alike, Project Office has produced a range of wellresearched, detailed and imaginative design concepts.
The best of these are presented in the exhibition, Changing Rooms, which is on display at Crescent Arts.
Scarborough has a vibrant creative sector with high quality cultural venues including the The Spa, Open Air Theatre, Stephen Joseph Theatre and Rotunda Museum.
However, we lack equivalent contemporary visual arts provision to meet professional and community interests.
This presents a significant opportunity for Crescent Arts to develop and build on over 35 years of support.
The proposed use of the site as an arts and cultural venue will provide a stunning space for art exhibitions, events and workshops, providing a range of open and inclusive cultural, leisure, educational and training activities for residents and visitors.
