Whitby retain Knockout Cup by eight points

Whitby and Borough Bowlings Clubs battled it out in the final of the Knockout Cup, played on North Cliff ’s green in Scarboroug­h. Whitby retained the trophy in an exciting, closely-fought tussle.

Whitby set off well with three winners out of the first four and a lead of 20 points.

Borough then took the next five games to lead by nine.

Whitby captain Alan Landers came off next, beating junior star Mathew Bell 21-17 and leaving two games on with only five points between the two sides.

Paul Morgan playing last came off with a 21-10 win to put Whitby six in front with just the last game on.

Ken Wale defeated Mick Gates 21-19 to secure an eightpoint win.

Sixty four bowlers took part in an open singles merit at Borough Bowling Club sponsored by GT Garages.

The pick of the first round draws saw Dave Lowe beat teammate Geoff Watson 2117, while the second round saw the in-form Billy Holdsworth fall to Borough’s Sue Wilkinson 21-20

Home bowlers featured in three of the last eight places but all went out – Dave Lowe beating Sue Wilkinson 21-10, Gary Puleston beating Dave Pryce 21-11 and Kevin Gates beating Ian Hadden 21-10. Geoff Price made the last semifinal berth, beating Andy Deighton 21-17.

The semi’s saw some quality bowling with Gary Puleston beating Dave Lowe 21-15 and Geoff Price beating Kevin Gates by the same score.

Geoff Price was first out of the blocks in the final, running into a 13-9 lead but Gary Puleston turned the game around in four ends to motor to a 1614 lead.

Puleston then finished off with a 21-18 victory.
