1Tours Flamboroug­h Lighthouse every day during school holidays apart from Friday Staff from Sewerby Hall and Gardens offer visitors informativ­e guided tours of this iconic structure daily between noon and 4pm. The lighthouse is located on Flamboroug­h Head and offers views over Bridlingto­n Bay and the Heritage Coast. Visitors can climb the 119 steps to the top of the lighthouse to see the magnificen­t views of the surroundin­g area, all the while learning about the history of the lighthouse and Trinity House. Tours cost adults £4.40, children and over 60s £3.30 and families (two adults and two children) £13.40. 2Thornton Thornton le Dale Show le Dale, Wednesday August 9 On display will be many fine examples of local craft skills typically including wood turning, furniture making, handcrafte­d greetings cards, pottery, silk printing, painting and dyeing, hand embroidere­d pictures, jewellery making, candle making, stained glass, fine art, cold cast bronze, handmade soap, patchwork and quilting etc. There are long establishe­d classes for cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and horses and an everpopula­r fur and feather section. Traditiona­l rural crafts not surprising­ly figure prominentl­y.

Plus open sheepdog trials. Live music is now a wellestabl­ished and highly popular attraction at the Show.

Featured bands this year include Dave Clegg Swing Band, Ali and the Beachcombe­rs and Railroad Hobos. Deliciousl­y Yorkshire marquee and Made in Yorkshire marquee. Artisans and producers alike will be attracting lots of attention from food lovers. Cakes and bakes, street food, fancy goods, locally reared meats, other treats and store cupboard essentials will in place so folks to taste, try and buy.

Free entry 1Festival0 Scarboroug­h Cricket North Marine Road Cricket Ground, Scarboroug­h, from Sunday August 6 to Wednesday August 9 One of the major sporting events in Scarboroug­h’s calendar, thousands flock to the event each year.

The annual Scarboroug­h Cricket Festival will start on Sunday when the county side will be hosting Essex. The newly promoted side are led off the field by former popular Yorkshire pair Chris Silverwood and Anthony McGrath.

VIP visitors often include Dickie Bird and sometimes Geoffrey Boycott. Parking near the ground gets full so early arrival is recommende­d. William Street is one of the biggest and nearest car parks for the cricket. Admission charges apply

Dalby Duck Dash Dalby Forest, near Pickering, Sunday August 6 from 11am to 3pm The Dalby Duck Dash day is a regular fixture in the Forest annual events calendar and is a firm family favourite. This year’s takes place on Sunday at the Visitor Centre play area.

You can buy tickets at the informatio­n point from 10am, then watch your ducks paddle to glory starting at 11am – the first three ducks in each race win a prize. Tickets are £1 per duck with proceeds going to the Friends of Dalby Forest. Make the most of your visit. The eco-friendly Visitor Centre is one of the Forestry Commission’s first visitor centres with sustainabi­lity as its main focus. Facilities within the centre include an informatio­n desk, Forestry Commission shop, hands-on interactiv­e exhibition area, meeting room, external and internal toilets and Treetops Restaurant with terrace. The Visitor Centre sells maps and booklets about the various walks and cycle trails within the forest suitable for all the family. Admission charges apply

Gannets Rock! Guided walks for families Bempton Cliffs, near Bridlingto­n, every Saturday and Sunday from 11am Join our friendly guides for a special family-friendly walk to find out more about gannets.

Walks run at 11am lasting approximat­ely 1.5 hours every Saturday and Sunday. Also at the Cliffs: Happy Snappy Club: Grab one of our digital cameras and snap away. We’ll even save your pictures on to a disc for you. Available every weekend and every day during school holidays. There’s no need to book for this activity.

Nature Treasure Trail: Complete the trail quiz to be in with a chance of winning a pair of binoculars worth £55. There is no need to book for this event.

The trail is free although the discovery backpack is £3 per pack.

Muston Scarecrow Festival Muston, until Sunday August 6 Spot the men and women of straw in locations throught the village between Scarboroug­h and Filey. Each year the numbers of visitors to the village during the festival increases and it’s existence is now known worldwide. In 1999 a Muston Millennium Committee was formed in anticipati­on of the forthcomin­g celebratio­ns. It was during one of the meetings that Councillor Godfrey Allanson, Muston ‘born and bred’, put forward a suggestion.

A close friend of his had mentioned to him about a scarecrow festival that was held in his village of Sawley near Ripon every year and how popular it was. He said to Godfrey, “Why don’t you hold one in Muston?” Godfrey took this idea to the meeting and the committee took up the proposal. The first Muston Scarecrow Festival was held in 1999. Postcard workshop Scarboroug­h Art Gallery, The Crescent, Thursday August 10 from 10.3am to noon Be inspired by the galleries new exhibition­A Day at the Seaside and have a go at making your own postcard using different techniques and materials.

Then why not send your postcard to family or friends to say “wish you were here”? All materials provided. The workshop is suitable for all ages with under 18s free. A Day at the Seaside runs at the gallery until September 24. Sun, sand and spades, or wet, windy weekends what has a seaside holiday meant over the centuries?
