Ayton Castle and a guided tour of the Old Town are among the Scarborough gems which will be open to the public for free as the annual Heritage Open Days event gets under way.

The event, which runs until Sunday, aims to raise public awareness of the country’s architectural, built, and historical heritage. Buildings that are either not usually open to the public, or that usually charge admission, will open for free.

SCARBOROUGH EVENTS
Ayton Castle – Saturday September 9 only, off Castle Rise, West Ayton, Scarborough, YO13 9JY.
A tour of Ayton Castle and its historic environs led by Chris Hall lasting about one hour including access into the tower and undercroft.

Dean Road Chapel – Sunday September 10 only, Dean Road Cemetery, Scarborough, YO12 7QS.
Open to the public from 11am to 3pm, with guided tours of notable features. There will also be a guided tour of the cemetery at 1pm, highlighting the stories of some of the fascinating people buried there.
Raincliffe Woods – Sunday September 10 only, Dog Bark Bend Car Park.
A guided walk led by Trevor Pearson and Marie Woods of Scarborough Archaeological & Historical Society lasting two to 2.5. hours looking at archaeological discoveries in Raincliffe Woods – 10.30am and 2.30pm.

Exhibition on Vice-Admiral Sir John Lawson, a Scarborough mariner who played an important role in the English civil war. Also a huge archive of information on fishing and shipbuilding, wartime, churches, pubs. Open 11am to 4pm.

Church – Friday September 8 only. Ramshill Road, Scarborough, YO11 2LN.
This church, designed by Lockwood and Mawson of Bradford, is known as the Cathedral of Nonconformity. Titus Salt was the leading subscriber.
The church will be open to visitors throughout the day 10am to 4pm. At 2pm Chris Hall of Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society will give a talk about the model of medieval Scarborough which is housed in the church.
Refreshments will be available 10am to 1.30pm. St Martin-on-the-Hill Church – Albion Road, Scarborough, YO11 2BT.
The church will be open from 10am to 5pm from September 7 to 9 and noon until 5pm on the Sunday 10.
There will be twice daily one-hour guided tours of the church’s pre-Raphaelite stained glass and decorations at the following times: Thursday 7, 10.30am and 3pm; Friday 8, 11am and 3pm; Saturday 9, 10.30am and 3pm; Sunday 10, noon (there is a service at 10.30am-11.45am) and 3pm. A walk-round exhibition on the life and work of the famous Victorian photographer Oliver Sarony 1820-79 whose large, purpose-built studios were adjacent to the church.
Plus ‘There’s Something About Mary’: an artwork by Angela Chalmers. Heritage Weekend Cafe – refreshments available in the cafe throughout the weekend.
