Solution could create other traffic issues
The petition to improve the A64 between York and Malton at first sight appears to be the solution to the traffic woes of driving between Scarborough and York.
However, as has happened in other parts of the country traffic backlogs will not be cured by this alone. More cars will be attracted (especially holidays and weekends) until the jams begin again on the single carriageway from Rillington to Scarborough, continuing along Seamer Road, with consequential high levels of pollution for the residents along the route.
In order to reduce traffic flow into Scarborough the bigger picture needs to be looked at. Public transport can only help if fares are reduced and services improved, both around Scarborough and to other urban areas. Millions of pounds spent on road schemes could be diverted to subsidise fares and services.
In Scarborough the county council and government should make money available to radically change traffic management and improve current traffic flow.
As I’ve suggested previously, the Seamer Road Park and Ride could be improved by giving free travel into Scarborough.
Also, a widening scheme to make a bus lane up to Queen Margaret’s junction would incentivise people to leave their cars. Or making use of existing roads, a one way traffic system could be trialled. Tom Farrell Lairs Lane, Snainton
