Cayton out-foxed in cup final

-

Cayton Cricket Club fell just short of wining the Grey Fox Trophy for 2017 as they lost by six wickets against Hall Park Templars at North Marine Road in a game reduced to 20 overs.

Colin Denton top-scored with 27, but a score of 89-8 was always going to be difficult to defend.

The home team show great fighting spirit in reducing Park to 42-4 as Denton (317) and Mark Wells (0-6 off 4 overs) bowled superb spells before knocking the runs off with two overs to spare.

Cayton topped their group after wins over the CYCL Renegades and Bolton Villas, plus a rain-affected draw against Wetherby Wrinklies.

They then convincingly beat Hepworth Idle by 59 runs in the semi-final to set up a place in the final of the competition.

Readers Scarborough Beckett League secretary Simon Dobson has been delighted with the impact of the side in their first year in the competition.

He said “The league have been delighted to have been involved with the team, who have all enjoyed the opportunity to play together after many years in opposing sides.

“The squad of 19 has been a massive credit to cricket in our area, showcasing our region superbly.

“A huge thank-you must go to Steve McAleese who not only captained the team, but has also done all the organising.

“It is hoped this will be repeated next summer.”
