College stars seal North England success
After being announced as the Top Primary School Team at the Scarborough Sports Awards, Scarborough College’s Under-11 girls’ hockey team have now ended their season on a high as North England Champions.
Following a successful campaign in the earlier rounds of the England Hockey In2Hockey Championships, they secured the winners title at Leeds University this week.
After beating Kirkham, King’s Chester and Wakefield GHS in the knock-out round, they then went on to face Pocklington in the semi-final.
With a draw at full-time, the teams had to battle it out on penalty flicks.
The College girls battled their nerves to secure another win and take them to the final against AKS Lytham School.
They went a goal down initially, but soon pulled two back to put them ahead, only to face a short corner against them at the dying seconds of the game.
They fought to the end and defended like champions to claim the overall title with a resounding 2-1 win as the final whistle blew.
As the smallest school to be represented at the final stage of the competition, the girls certainly showed true passion and team spirit and gave the biggest performance of all.
Thanks to coaches Mr Cunningham and Mr Barker and all the supporters who have cheered them of their journey. Squad (pictured right): Katie Barker, Lucy Barker, Madeleine Barker, Delilah D’Arcy, Emma Guthrie, Ellie Jackson, Lucy Milburn, Harriet Swiers.
