North Cliff and Borough play in tribute to Terry
Clubs arrange match to battle it out for new trophy in clubmate’s honour
Members of Borough and North Cliff bowling clubs will pay tribute to one of their former members Terry Summersgill on Saturday.
They will play for a trophy made by Borough member and Summersgill’s friend and clubmate John Purdy.
The first memorial match will be held at Borough’s Manor Road green on Saturday at 2pm. It is hoped the game will then be held at North Cliff next year.
Terry, who lived near the Manor Road green, passed away in St Catherine’s Hospice last month.
He joined North Cliff in 1994 and moved to Manor Road in 2006. He remained an active member until illness overtook him at the end of last year.
He also played in competitions at clubs along the coast including in Bridlington, Hunmanby, Eastfield, Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby.
He was a highly-regarded and respected player and was involved with organising competitions and joined his bowling clubs’ committees.
Terry served for 20 years on the Gambart Baines committee, which oversaw the running of the East Coast bowls competition at the Alexander greens.
He was part of a volunteer group who attended matches.
“Terry loved his bowling and was passionate that the game should be played in a sporting manner,” read the eulogy from Borough.
“Always starting with a handshake and “Let’s have a good game” and also finishing with another handshake, a smile and a cup of tea.
“He loved to see younger generations take up the sport and encouraged and coached anyone wanting to have a go.”
North Cliff members also paid tribute to Terry. “A wonderful man”, “One of the good ones”, “A fantastic bloke” and “We shall sorely miss his repartee” were some of the comments made.
“It was typical of Terry, when learning of Eastfield’s struggles in recent years, that he paid a subscription as a non-playing member in order to help out a fellow club,” they said.
Mr Summersgill also enjoyed the home-making put on at merit days. All are welcome to Saturday’s match.
