A Devon woman is attempting to trace Scarborough links to her grandad, whom she knows nothing about beyond a few mystifying clues.

Hannah Davies, from Exeter, hopes readers of the Scarborough News can help her.

She said: “I’m researching my family tree and would like to help my elderly mother, Shirley.

“We don’t know who my mother’s biological father was.

“She was born 1931 in Scarborough to Jessie Moorhouse. No father was mentioned on either short or long birth certificate.

“No baptism record was found. Jessie Moorhouse was born 1908 Sheffield to Sam Peckect Moorhouse and Hannah (nee Stenton).

“They lived and worked in the Sheffield/Barnsley area.

“Hannah Moorhouse moved from Grimethorpe to Scarborough about 1925 to set up a fish and chip shop business.

“The only evidence I have to the identity of my mother’s father are several empty envelopes, a torn letter and a Christmas card.

“These were all carefully kept and well hidden by Jessie but found when we were clearing the house.

“They were all from ‘Jim’ and there were a few photos with the same name.

“There are no parish records, at least that I found. They lived in the Falsgrave area.

“The only clues I have are a few photos, envelopes, a card and a letter from ‘Jim’. By the writing on the back, the photos were taken in Blackpool in 1929 but could be in Scarborough where they were living.”
