A stage version of a favourite novel for younger people is the autumn half-term treat from Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre.
Stig of the Dump can be seen in the Round until Saturday. This lively, time-travelling show about a bored boy called Barney, who meets a caveman called Stig, is from the same team as last year’s sell-out production of George’s Marvellous Medicine.
The cast includes two professional actors who are both originally from Scarborough, and two members of the theatre’s youth theatre group, Rounders. Shannon Rewcroft (pictured, right) plays Grandma. Shannon is from Scarborough and trained at Drama Studio London, where she was a Spotlight Prize Nominee in 2014. She has been seen in Wait Until Dark, Shadowlands and Treasure Island.
Actor, comedian and former Rounder Paddy Young plays Grandad. He is also from Scarborough and made his professional debut at the age of 11 in Alan Ayckbourn’s The Jollies at the Stephen Joseph. After graduating from the Manchester School of Theatre he co-founded Swaggering Crow theatre company; its productions of A Kidnapping and Things We Want enjoyed critical success in Manchester before going on tour. Tom Gilbert, who plays Barney, has beena member of Rounders for five years. He performed in Grimm Tales in 2017 and in the Rounders’ 40th anniversary production, All Delighted People, earlier this year. Mimi Clay plays Barney’s sister, Lou. She has participated in numerous productions at school, the YMCA and the SJT. Mimi has been a member of Rounders since she was eight. Stig of the Dump can be seen in the Round at 10.30am and 2pm on Thursday November 1; and at 2pm and 7pm on Friday November 2 and Saturday November 3.
