Path work complete ‘but signs are needed’
‘This footpath is one of the nicest walks in the village’
Work has been completed on a long-lost footpath near Hunmanby railway tracks, but closed signs remain.
In February, the issue of the footpath off Bridlington Street was featured in these pages, when work began to restore it.
According to residents, the track had been neglected for some time, with littering becoming a regular occurrence.
Resident Nick Harvey said: “This footpath is one of the nicest walks in the village, with views to the sea contrasting with an unspoilt view of the Yorkshire Wolds.
Works by Network Rail to install new drainage in the area to prevent flooding of the nearby train line has been completed and the track has been completely resurfaced with chippings, meaning it is now in really good condition, yet still signs remain in place stating the walk is closed.
Mr Harvey said: “I’ve said I’d be happy to go up and remove the signs. The path is technically open.
“However, for a third of its length it runs next to and across the Scarborough Autograss club’s land off Bartindale Road.
“I’ve been in touch with the Public Rights of Way Department saying we need to sort out where the footpath goes.
“We need to get some signs put up, little posts that show you where you’re going.
“It’s even more important now with cycling and walking being top of the agenda.
“It would be a pleasant walk if it was open.”
Kerry Green, Interim Countryside Access Manager with North Yorkshire County Council, said: “A six-month temporary closure of Public Footpath Number 30.11/1/1 began on 3 February this year, applied for by Network Rail, so that new drainage could be installed. Applicants are responsible for removing closure notices to reopen routes onceworksarecompletedand we will contact Network Rail to remind them of this.
“We are investigating the additional blockages to the public footpath that have been reported to us. However, this has been delayed because of the impact Covid-19 has had on our working practices. Once inspected, any obstructions to the public footpath will be raised with the responsible parties.”
