Beckett League action back with a bang
After a lengthy lay off due to the coronavirus pandemic, recreational cricket made a long-awaited return on a drizzly, overcast Saturday.
A revamped Scarborough Beckett League attracted 34 teams, split into five divisions including a two-zone Premier Division competition.
In Zone One, 2019 Beckett League champions Filey triumphed at North Marine Road against Scarborough.
Filey elected to bowl first and restricted their hosts to 154 all out, Nick Zakrzewski top-scoring with 47 as Stuart Neilson bagged 4-21 and Josh Dawson took 3-37.
Dawson then smashed an unbeaten 65 and Ryan Baldry added 40 to guide the champions safely to 158-5.
Elsewhere in Zone One, Staxton edged to a five run win at home against a youthful Sewerby outfit.
Dave Morris’ 63 and 37 from Jonny Aldcroft helped Staxton post 188-8, Will Macdonald taking 3-5.
Despite Michael Artley’s unbeaten 50, Sewerby fell agonisingly short on 183-6 as six different Staxton bowlers grabbed a wicket apiece.
Scalby cruised to victory at Flixton 2nds.
Brett Cunningham’s 70, 41 from Ben Luntley and 37 from Brad Walker guided Scalby to 197-6, Charlie Colley taking 4-24.
Flixton were all out for 90 in reply, young leg-spinner Gregor Fraser taking 3-17.
Bridlington 2nds won away at Sherburn.
Sherburn were 110 all out, Alan Lickes hitting 46 and Kyle Outhart making 38 as Ben Jackson took 3-20.
Brid then made their way to 111-6, Andy Smith top-scoring with 28.
Max Fraser was in fine form with the bat to help Great Habton to victory over Ebberston in Zone Two.
Ben Lockey’s 64 and 51 from Jonny Mason guided Ebberston to 187-6, but it wasn’t enough as Fraser hammered 13 fours and eight sixes on his way to 116 not out from 71 balls to help Habton home by the tightest of margins on 190-9.
All-rounder Andy Slaughter was also a man in form as he shone with bat and ball in Heslerton’s win over Wykeham.
Slaughter hit 50 in Heslerton’s 151-6, Adam Hutchinson taking 4-24.
The all-rounder then took 3-16 alongside 3-15 from Kristian Wilkinson as Wykeham were restricted to 132 all out despite 50 from Michael Dugdale and 28 from James Bryant.
Ball dominated bat as Nawton Grange won by five wickets against Thornton Dale.
Joe Judge bagged 4-9 as
Dale slipped to 87 all out before Grange made it safely to 91-5, Ben Stamp making 29.
Settrington’s game against Staithes was abandoned.
Glaisdale started life in the Beckett League with a comfortable seven wicket win over Ravenscar in Division A.
Ravenscar were all out for just 100, John Nelson hitting 29 as Graham Featherstone claimed 4-18 and Alex Burtt 3-40.
Alex Livie then remained unbeaten on 49 as Glaisdale cruised to 102-3.
Scalby 2nds also picked up a comfortable win, beaten Ganton by 100 runs.
Gareth Edmunds (31), Nigel Clapham (28) and Jon Barton (26) helped Scalby to 182-6 before Ganton were all out for just 82 in reply, Adrian Hollingsworth taking 3-10.
