Haar Restaurant 127 North St, St Andrews 49 50

Rachel Mcconachie enjoys a wine and seafood taste sensation

-

FOOD:

The tasting and a la carte menus focus on local, sustainable produce, mainly seafood, with an eye on their carbon footprint. We chose the tasting menu with wine pairing and there was no problem swapping the pork and beef dishes for vegetarian alternatives and the kitchen was happy to cater for a gluten intolerance too. The meal began with oysters dressed with sea buckthorn, coriander and chef Dean Banks’ own Lunun Gin followed by other stand-out dishes such as the tandoori cauliflower and delicious scallops. The wine was paired to perfection starting with a fresh Franciacorta, two other favourites were the Pecorino and the chilled Gamay. 10/10

SERVICE:

The waiting staff are a wonderful mix of professional, knowledgeable, relaxed and fun. Food and drinks are served in a timely fashion and staff are attentive but not fussy. The team clearly love what they do and the food they are serving, and that enthusiasm is infectious. 10/10

AMBIENCE:

The calming colour palette of blue and grey, with simple wooden tables and beautiful abstract seascapes on the walls make for a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere. 10/10

VALUE FOR MONEY:

Haar is certainly a choice for special occasions rather than just grabbing a bite to eat, but you really do get what you pay for here. The quality and general experience is outstanding so well worth the price tag. 10/10

FACILITIES:

Set in Kinnettles Hotel, the restaurant is small and cosy yet very comfortable. Booking ahead is recommended. 9/10 www.haarrestaurant.com
