This year marks 90 years since the last St Kildans left this remote yet stunning group of islands

Marking 90 years since the evacuation of this remote group of islands

left on August 29 of that year, and now the National Trust for Scotland looks after St Kilda as a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site. The status was awarded for both the archipelag­o’s heritage and habitat, which includes its own native wren and a sub-species of mouse – twice the size of a British fieldmouse.

Susan Bain is the National Trust for Scotland’s manager for St Kilda and the Western Isles.

“St Kilda has attained an almost legendary reputation,” she says. “It’s a symbol of a lost world of existence on the edge and a lifestyle that few now will ever experience. 
