According to folklore, Agnes followed her army sweetheart to the US during the American War of Independen­ce. She searched for him to no avail, and her ghost can still be seen around Camden, South Carolina to this day.

The modern version wasn’t invented until 1968, but an early form of the waterbed was actually mastermind­ed in 1833 by this Arbroath-born physician, aiming to relieve bedsores in the elderly and disabled.

Described as having “an exquisite sense of the ridiculous and a sharp tongue,” this suffragett­e from Montrose was sentenced to six months in prison for trying to break into the House of Commons in 1908.
