The sea cliffs on Hirta, the largest island in St Kilda, are the highest in the British Isles

St Kilda is Europe’s most important seabird colony, and one of the major seabird breeding stations in the North Atlantic.

In the late 14th century Scottish chronicler John of Fordun wrote that St Kilda is “on the margine of the world, beyond which there is found no land in these bounds.”
