Larks In Winter

-

I enjoyed Jim Crumley’s article about larks in the May issue. I live in Fraserburgh and there are lots of larks tweeting on the golf course. I have seen a nest on the side of a high sand dune above the 16th green. However, my bird-watching friend is unable to tell me where they go, or what they do in winter. Please ask Jim to enlighten me. Elizabeth Maitland, Fraserburgh

Jim says, “In winter, many of them leave the nesting territory and generally drift south and spend the winter along our sea coasts and salt marshes. Many stay in Scotland, some go further south in Britain and Ireland and some migrate to the Continent. Just to confuse matters, there is also movement into Scotland from the Continent. There is much more in my wee book titled Skylark in my Encounters in the Wild series of short monographs.”
