Charles Darwin identified a moth in 1862 from the flower it fed on. An orchid in Madagascar had a nectar spur longer than any known insect could feed from, and Darwin concluded there must be a moth out there with a 20cm (11-inch) tongue. In 1903 it was found – the xanthopan morganii.
