Geology Rocks

The Rock Stop is the epicentre of the North West Highlands Geopark

-

THE North West Highlands is one of the most sparsely populated areas in Europe, with a fascinating geological history. Protecting this area, and spanning some 2,000 square km (770 square miles), is the North West Highland Geopark, and at its heart is The Rock Stop at Unapool. The Geopark was granted its UNESCO status in 2004, and contains some of the oldest rocks in Europe.

The Geopark was founded with the intention of investigating, preserving and educating people on the complex geology of the area which covers around two thirds of Earth’s history. Notable landmarks that are dotted across the landscape include the jagged peaks of Stac Pollaidh, the intriguing Smoo Cave and the imposing tip of Suilven.

The Rock Stop is the hub for the Geopark and a visit here will allow visitors to not only appreciate the beauty of these mountain silhouettes but also to understand the significance of the very rocks that form them.

Geology may not be at the forefront of people’s minds when planning an exciting day out but if you don’t enter

The Rock Stop with a passion for geology, then you will certainly leave with one.

Don’t let its small exterior fool you – there’s more to this centre than meets the eye. There is a popular café, a gift shop and the main attraction which reveals more than 3000 million years of history. The exhibition is very hands on and kids will love to get stuck in with their Augmented Reality Sandbox to learn about relief maps.

Dr Laura Hamlet, a geoarchaeologist and the North West Highland Geopark co-ordinator, encourages visitors to pop into The Rock Stop if they are exploring the park and get the whole family involved.

“Our most popular attraction is our VR experience that guides you around the Geopark,” she says. “It offers visitors a chance to see some amazing views, for example from the top of Stac Pollaidh, without having to actually get up there. We really want to make the park as inclusive and accessible as possible so even those without reduced mobility can enjoy the wonderful Geopark.”
