Salomon Sense Flow Running Shoes, £120

ITRIED these shoes out on a decidedly uneven forest path to test the various trail-running benefits. The shoe follows the natural motion of your foot and works with you to tackle rough terrain, and the curved heel provides a stable foothold when racing downhill. The quick-lace system for one-pull tightening also effectively eliminates the risk of tripping over loose laces. Finding running shoes that support my high arch is tricky, so I did enjoy the Ortholite® inner sole which adapted to each landing. I’d have liked more of a waterproof outer, and perhaps a touch more ankle support.

Mountain Warehouse Full Wetsuit, £69.99

FANTASTIC value for the money. With 90% neoprene, it does its job of keeping you warm enough to enjoy a few hours’ summer fun on a Scottish loch. I tried it on a borrowed paddleboard on Loch Ard – even jumping in a few times for a proper test. Flat seams prevent abrasion and thickness varies across the suit, giving a superb fit and ease of movement. It’s intended for activities like surfing and body boarding

– so not suitable for long-distance swimming. A great entry-level option for those on a budget. Sizing is a bit on the big side – if in doubt, drop down a size.

Lifeventure Flip-top Water Bottle, 750ml, £12.99

NO matter what your activity, carrying enough water is essential. For big hikes and multi-day adventures I prefer a waterskin that I can sip as I walk, but for shorter walks or bike rides, this bottle is perfect. It’s made of impact resistant Tritan co-polyester – which is impressively durable. My bike and I both ended up scratched and bruised after falling off on a trail, but the bottle – having bounced down a gorge after being knocked loose – was completely unmarked. It has a measuring scale in both metric and imperial which is handy, and a built-in drinking straw for easy sipping.

Smartwool PHD Run Ultra Light Socks, £17.99

HAVING socks that don’t slip into my shoe and keep my feet both cool and dry is essential whether I’m cycling, walking or running. These Smartwool ultra light micro socks are perfect. I’ve had them for months now and they are showing no sign of wear, despite being regularly washed, and they make my feet feel cocooned and protected whatever I’m putting them through. They are breathable, so there’s no sweaty mess, yet cushioned without adding any bulk. The slimmer women’s fit is a great thought too. There are many colourful options to choose from.
