The Scots Magazine

Be Inspired

IF you’re active on social media you’re probably aware of The Scots Magazine’s Adventure Is On Your Doorstep campaign. It’s all about appreciating how lucky we are to call Scotland home – we pack in an awful lot for a small country and you don’t have to travel far for fun.

If it’s a Big Adventure you’re after, we’ve literally hundreds of mountains that can be climbed, walked, run or skied as well as the best long distance trails in the UK – like the West Highland Way or, for the seriously hardcore, the Cape Wrath Trail.

If you’re short on time, enjoy a Wee Adventure – a mountain bike ride after work, or even camping in the back garden with the kids at the weekend.

Of course, adventures don’t always have to be outdoors, or adrenaline-fuelled. I was on a climbing trip and stayed in Fort William recently. Heading out for a curry and a couple of pints, and getting the chance to sit, chat and catch up with friends after months of lockdown felt more of an adventure than the climbing.

And with many of our fantastic museums, galleries, castles, gardens and stately homes all opening up again, you’re sure to find some form of adventure on your doorstep. We bring you loads of adventure inspiration in these pages every month.

My nephew, Archie, is almost four. We’ve decided that once a month we’ll have an “Adventure Weekend”.

Our latest involved a wee hike to play in the ruins of Mugdock Castle, near Glasgow, and that evening we picked up a canoe from outdoor adventure centre Go Country on Loch Ard, practically on my doorstep.

It was Archie’s first time on the water and he was thrilled – especially as it included a visit to a secret wooded island with a tiny bothy – which Archie insisted was a “yeti’s house”…

We explored the island, made our dinner on my stove, packed up, tidied up and headed back to shore. It was a wee adventure that felt like a big adventure!
