Amenity Trust looks after a number of attractions across the islands that strive to preserve and share their rich culture, and there is no better place to begin your visit than at Shetland Museum and Archives.
Sandy Middleton is head of engagement at the trust and is eagerly looking forward to welcoming visitors back to the museum.
“The modern five-star museum a sits on the picturesque Hay’s Dock,” Sandy says. “This is the last area of original dock on Lerwick waterfront.
“Visitors can explore the story of Shetland’s heritage and culture in one place, with access to a wealth of documents and more than 3000 artefacts covering all aspects of the islands’ past, including world famous textiles, Pictish art and boats hanging in the Boat Hall.”
Due to the amount there is to see, it is a good idea to take advantage of the fantastic tours. The museum’s Highlights Tour takes around 45 minutes and covers the key artefacts from each gallery.
Alternatively, for real history buffs, the curator-led tours are a fantastic opportunity to explore the collections in more depth and can be customised depending on your interests.
It can sometimes be tricky to keep younger visitors engaged in museums, but the Shetland museum succeeds in doing just that with several larger, eye-catching and interactive exhibitions to keep kids entertained.
The huge replica glacier, the traditional trowie knowe house that you can and explore, and the gruesome box of doctor’s instruments will all capture young imaginations.
When visiting somewhere as unique and special as Shetland, it is important to understand and appreciate the history, people and events that have shaped the community.
To learn about everything from the first Iron Age settlers, to the Vikings, to the Shetland locals of the 21st century, the Shetland Museum and Archives should be your first stop on your Shetlandic Adventure.
