Cathedral query

I HAVE often thought how ludicrous it is that the presbyteri­an Hie Kirk of Edinburgh hangs on to its brief 17th-century status as a “cathedral”, but having just read a quote in your paper from “one of the canons at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh” (“New Kirk moderator given second chance”, 29 October), I see that I am the one who is out of date.

Is St Giles’ an anomaly, or has the Kirk in general reverted to its full medieval hierarchy of bishops and archbishop­s, deans and archdeacon­s?

At least this would provide a much-needed promotion structure. Braehead Grove

Edinburgh Jim Murphy’s interested, his close associatio­n with the No campaign and his evident attraction to “big-boy” politics as an absentee leader in Holyrood will almost certainly rule him out as the man to win back deserters. Boyack will make a good interim leader till Labour sees how the general election pans out at least. who runs – it is a poisoned chalice for anyone who takes it on. Labour still hasn’t worked out what to do with devolution. The public have realised that there is no point to devolution if you are going to vote in a party that is not allowed to have different policies to the one in England. that she is an MSP and not a Westminste­r MP. We haven’t heard a lot from her for a long time and she did not disgrace herself by openly speaking out for Better Together. Maybe she deserves some credit. the best interests of the Scottish people at heart and is brave enough to take on the Labour hierarchy in Edinburgh and in London. She must be given the opportunit­y to rebuild Scottish Labour. Labourite with a sane voice and a record of fighting for her constituen­ts in Edinburgh. is why does Anas Sarwar not seem to want the job? He is deputy leader, after all. yet another Westminste­r New Labour stitch-up.
