Murray: Best is yet to come

● Wimbledon champion says he is determined to enjoy third major title ● Raonic hails ‘phenomenal’ victory

Andy murray was crowned the king of Wimbledon yesterday and, after a brilliant straightsets victory over Canada’s Milos Raonic, he declared: “My best tennis is still ahead of me.”

Murray stood up to Raonic’s thunderbolt serve, firing stunning shots of his own to thrill the Centre Court crowd and the Scot admitted he was determined to enjoy this victory more than his previous success at the All-england Club three years ago.

In 2013 the pressure and weight of expectation – no Briton had won the men’s title for 77 years – had got to him. “The last time it was such a big thing for a British man to win Wimbledon. It had been so long,” he said. “It’s different this time. I feel happier this time. I feel like this [win] was sort of more for myself more than anything, and my team as well. We’ve all worked really hard to help get me in this position.”

As well as his support-squad, and the terrific support in the stands, Murray also said his baby daughter Sophia deserved credit for spurring him on to what is his third Grand Slam title. “It’s given me a little bit of extra motivation – to work hard, train hard and do all of the right things to give myself a chance of winning these events.”

Raonic was generous in his praise of the new champion. “It’s phenomenal for him to back up his win from three years ago,” he said.

“Andy’s been in many finals since that he wasn’t able to make the most of, but this is a big step forward. I did the best I could but Andy played a great match.

“He’s been playing great here. Guys haven’t really been able to give him a true big scare. He definitely deserved to win this tournament.”

Murray’s ability to return the big Raonic serve – measured at 147mph – was key to the outcome. “Andy is one of the two best returners in the game,” the No 6 seed added, although Murray did the other things well too.

“He’s going to pass you. He moves well. He gets himself in good position. He has good touch.he’s going to pass you.”

What else could Murray win? “What’s next is up to him. He’s got to go for it.”
