Police arrest woman over Jeremy Vine cycle rant footage posted online

- By MARGARET DAVIS

A 22-year-old woman has been arrested after broadcaster Jeremy Vine posted footage online of a confrontation with a driver on his cycle home.

The clip, which has been viewed more than 500,000 times via the 51-year-old’s Facebook page, showed a row in a street in Kensington, west London, on 26 August.

Vine, who has a regular slot on Radio 2 as well as presenting TV shows including Crimewatch, Panorama and Eggheads, commutes by bike from his home in Chiswick to BBC offices near Oxford Circus, and wears a helmet camera for the journey.

The woman was arrested on 2 September after police assessed the footage.

Scotland Yard said: “The 22-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of common assault and a public order offence. She has been bailed to return to police on a date in early September.”

The clip shows the driver of a black Vauxhall getting out and shouting at Vine after he had stopped in the middle of the road. She said: “Why the f*** would you stop in front of a car? You don’t respect your f ****** life. Move your bike, move your bike.”

The presenter claimed that she began kicking the bike off camera and, later at a set of traffic lights, she was filmed again getting out of the car and saying: “If you take a picture of my car again I’m going to knock you out because that’s my personal belongings. Don’t f ****** take a picture.”

Off camera, Vine claimed that, as he pulled alongside the car, she then made her hand into the shape of a gun and mimed firing it at him.

But the woman denied this in an interview with the Sun and claimed she had been provoked. Giving her name only as Shayna, she said: “He made me look impatient but he was riding on the pavement and came out on to the road in front of me, with no hand signals.

“The road had parking on either side. He was dangerous. He pulled out in front of me, making me have to make an emergency stop.

“Then he had the arrogance and cheek to block me in the middle of the road. That’s what set me off.”
