The Scotsman

A popular leader

-

Brian Monteith is clutching at straws when he claims that the SNP’S nine-year long “honeymoon” is over as the latest Yougov poll puts the SNP support up 4 per cent compared to May’s Scottish elections, while Labour has fallen by 5 per cent (Perspective, 5 September).

With 53 per cent thinking Nicola Sturgeon is doing a good job at running the country she remains the most popular leader in the UK and far more popular than Theresa May at 35 per cent, who really is in a press honeymoon period, while only 46 per cent think Ruth Davidson is doing a good job of opposition as Labour implodes to impotency.

Nicola Sturgeon is right to seek alliances and consult on what ordinary voters think about the material change of Brexit and the No side’s 2014 broken promises, whereas Theresa May seems reluctant to give MPS a vote on Article 50 being triggered or on the final terms of Brexit.

The pollsters failed to include 16 and 17 years old and that would have the effect of bringing the Yes/no support into the normal 3 per cent margin of error and that is why North Britons are going apoplectic rather than saying “bring it on” as they remember that, despite the overwhelming opposition of the right wing press, Yes support increased by 15 per cent during the actual referendum campaign once the arguments were fully considered.
