Stirling and Ayr flex their muscles with early wins

Likely title contenders Stirling County and Ayr have made a strong start in the President’s Conference at under-18 level with two wins from two.

Stirling kicked off with a 97-0 win over West of Scotland and then last Saturday the Bridgehaug­h club scored their second win, a 29-0 victory against Boroughmui­r, Cameron Blakemore and Kieran Gammie each scoring two tries with Aidan Reddick bagging the fifth score.

County are operating with a squad of 47 at under-18 level, allowing the Bridgehaug­h club to run two teams in this age grade.

Their second side play in the Caledonia Conference League and won for a second successive week with a 22-7 victory over Montrose.

Ayr have defeated Currie Colts (54-33) and Highland (29-6).

In schools rugby, George Watson’s College began their competitiv­e season with a 20-15 win over RGS, Newcastle at Myreside with tries by Harry Carruthers, Campbell Wilson and Chris Carson (2). Edinburgh Academy defeated Glasgow Academy 30-25.

At Mayfield, Dundee High School achieved their first win of the season with a 40-22 result against Hutchesons’ Grammar School, Sean Gauld scoring two tries, the others by Angus Campbell, Angus Fraser, Aengus Mccrimmon, and Rory Johnston.

In the first round of the Schools Cup, Earlston High School’s 47-7 win over Linlithgow Academy ensures that the Borders school will be represente­d in the second round at both under-18 and under-16 levels. Galashiels Academy are also through at both age grades having defeated Trinity Academy in the under-18 tie (19-5) and Ross High at U16 level (37-28).
