SIR ALEX FERGUSON Sir Alex was tipping Scotland to beat England in their crunch clash at Wembley next month, citing Scotland’s victory in 1999 as evidence that they could do it. Twitter responded.

@Mike_walsh_fin said: “Alex Ferguson: “Scotland always do well against England, it’s always a great incentive when we are the underdogs.” - When were they not that?” @alandonald17 said: “Totally agree with Sir Alex Ferguson its a must win fixture for Scotland at Wembley” However, @Bbctomenglish said “Alex Ferguson talking up Scotland’s chances at Wembley based on a game 17 years ago. A tad unconvincing.”

ZAC GOLDSMITH Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith was trending as it was announced he was set to resign over the Heathrow Airport expansion. Goldsmith, a vocal critic of the expansion had pledged in the past that he’d resign if it was given the green light.

@simonperry said: “Was Zac Goldsmith’s MP resignation principled over Heathrow, or the stark truth that his ruthless attempt to be Mayor destroyed his image?” @Peterdavidkirby said: “Would be happy if the expected Richmond Park by-election triggered by Tory Zac Goldsmith resigning ended up being a Lib Dem gain.” @pierrestanley45 said: “Zac Goldsmith will simply get re-elected as an independent & vote with the Govt on everything bar Heathrow. So very little impact really.” Meanwhile @Hansplat said: “Still, it will be a consolation to Zac Goldsmith to know he’s in fourth place behind #worldpastaday”
